Usability tip: Amazon Vote for Deal Feature

Here is an example from Amazon.com, on how to encourage people to participate.

Amazon Vote for deal

Users have to vote for the deal they like the best. This way, people are encouraged to do an active act. Unless you vote for it, you’re not even able to buy it for that price. Very encouraging.

Amazon could really collect some interesting user data here. What is the best deal? Which products do people want?

This reminds me of some of the examples from James Surowiecki’s Wisdom of Crowds: How Prediction Markets Work. Especially the example from Eli Lily where the crowd bets on which products make it through clinical testing.

This is where i think Wisdom of Crowds can make a difference in user interface design. Well done Amazon! I am, of course, very interested in data that’s documenting how it works.
