Same, New Window, Or Tab? Let Users Decide Themselves

Sidebar note to the related article “Open New Window Still Has Usability Issues“.

If your applications open links in the same window, users can actually decide for themselves how they want to open the window. Current browsers support these keyboard shortcuts:

  • Click a link and holding Shift key opens link in new window
  • Click a link and holding Ctrl key opens link in new tab

Same window, new window, or new tab? Let the users decide for themselves. Just code your website to that all links open in same windows, as this will help the users in the best possible way.

I am having issues with my browser forcing me to open some links in anew window, even though the other links on that page open with no problem. Any help would be great.
