Must see Michael Wesch of Kansas University released a brilliant video on the possibilities of the web.

It’s a fantastic intro and eyeopener, and it makes me wonder, if it would be relevant to use at work with clients to give a short intro (because it contains a lot of things I may take for granted that people know).

Originally posted on YouTube. A higher quality version is available from Mojiti (with comments from viewers, actually). Michael Wesch encourages anybody to add comments on the Mojiti site.

In my search for a complete transcript, i stumbled upon a short resume of the final sentences of the movie:

At the end of the video, it points out that we have to rethink about a couple of things, many which i have been thinking about quite a bit as Web 2.0 is embedded into the enterprise-like issues of copyright, authorship, ethics, governance and privacy among others. The full list that professor Wesch lists as things we need to ‘rethink’ about is:

copyright

authorship

identity

ethics

aesthetics

rhetoric

governance

privacy

commerce

love

family

ourselves

Could anybody point me to a full transcript of this video?

The point in the post is simple:

I keep running across sites that offer the same exact content as an RSS feed and an Atom feed.

What’s the point of this? Making readers choose a feed format is like asking them to choose between an HTML and XHTML version of your site – technically there are differences, but end users shouldn’t have to care about this. They just want to subscribe to your words of wisdom without having to deal with the plumbing.

Here at justaddwater.dk we have on our front-page and in all our posts always only linked to our RSS 2.0 feed – So far so good. But in our HTML source there have always been a list of alternate tags linking to both Atom and RSS 0.92.

To not alienate our readers that have been using Atom or RSS 0.92 we have decided not to actually shutdown these feeds, only remove them from our HTML. This way no new user will start to use them.

To take it even further we need to implement proper feedicons instead of just writing RSS 2.0 (a technical description many users don’t understand) – But that must be on our to-do list.

Conclusion

WordPress (and others) should let the administrator choose which syndication feed to offer the readers. It should also incorporate the feedicon into the default design.

Syndicated feeds in form of RSS or Atom is the hot way of getting news from around the world delivered instantly and dynamically to your desktop. Previously a user could only do so by registering for an e-mail newsletter.

Believe it or not some people don’t have a news aggregator installed. They might not even know of the free online news aggregators like for instance Google Reader. Maybe they don’t feel safe with this new technology or maybe they simply just don’t care. Whatever the reason we should still consider offering them the old school newsletter send by regular e-mail alongside the news feed offer.

At justaddwater.dk we have just signed up for the free Zoodoka Newsletter service as you can see by the presence of the “Free Newsletter” sign-up box on the front page. So if you are an old school newsletter lover, visit the front page and sign up for our free newsletter. Currently we send it out twice a week (Mondays and Thursdays) – but this may change as we grow wiser.

If you have experience with newsletters vs. syndicated news feeds and user behavior in this area please share your comments and ideas by leaving a comment below.
