Ok… what happened? I was blogging about my trip to JavaOne (The arrival, The waiting, Day One), and then what? No day two or anything. There are many excuses but none of them really matter since this is a blog and here I make the rules. Ok Jesper does as well, and he have been teasing me with the missing posts from JavaOne. Sorry :(

Anyway. There wasn’t really anything interesting from a usability or web standards point of view (this was in fact a Java conference believe it or not).

I did however mange to upload a bunch of photos to Flickr :)
Browse my JavaOne 2006 set here »

I could of cause write some stuff about the more interesting sessions, but it’s late now and I need to go to bed. Besides, I should have done so when they where fresh in my mind.

The only thing that I can say is: Some interesting stuff is in the pipeline here at justaddwater.dk and both Jesper and I are looking forward to share it with you :)

The day started with a “Sun General Session” for all conference attendees. If there is one sentence that is worth repeating from this session it must be this one by Rich Green when he is asked by Jonathan Schwartz (President and CEO of Sun) “Are you gonna open source Java?”:

“It isn’t a question of whether, but a question of how”

See webcast, segment two, 22:10

The rest of the session was full of news of different Java frameworks, tools, etc. that was going to be open sourced – It is truly a good day for the Open Source community :)

I recommend you, if you haven’t seen it already to go to the JavaOne website and watch the whole session as a webcast (you need to have RealPlayer installed – weird when you think about that this is a Java convention… Isn’t Java supposed to be open?)

Blogger Meetup

I unfortunately had to skip the “Beyond AJAX: Asynchronous JavaScript Technology and XML Native Processing” session. It was at the same time as the JavaOne Blogger Meetup. About a 100 people had signed up for the blogger meetup at the Thirsty Bear – The favored pub for JavaOne attendees.

I met a lot of interesting bloggers. For instance I got a chance to talk to Joe Walker, the author of DWR – an AJAX framework for Java – and Dave Johnson, the author of Roller – the blogging software that for instance runs most of the blogs at Sun and IBM (written in Java of cause).

I can just say that it was really nice to meet everybody and I really hope to get a chance to attend another meetup sometime in the future :)

JavaOne is the biggest Java convention in the world held once a year in USA. Five of my colleagues and me from Capgemini have taken the long trip from Denmark to San Francisco in California (19 hours!). My plan is to give you daily updates on all the interesting sessions I’m attending. I’m especially looking forward to hearing the following:

Beyond AJAX: Asynchronous JavaScript ™ Technology and XML Native Processing

I’ve put my whole session schedule online, but keep in mind that this is just resevations I made from home, so I might skip some of them or join other sessions.

Traveling experiences

Delta must truly be an air line company of the world. A flight attendance actually gave me visa and immigration forms written in Dutch! I thought I spoke Danish. A couple of my colleagues also got Dutch forms – the rest got them in French?! I managed to fill them out without understanding the questions. I’m writing this on the plane, so I don’t know yet if I’m gonna be allowed inside the States… “Bent U ooit betrokken geweest bij spionage of sabotage?” – I answered “yes” – I hope that was correct. The info screen displaying outside temperature and altitude was in some weird language that I don’t even know of. Oh yes… they where showing two in-flight movies. But the whole row of seats where I was sitting had a malfunction so the earphone plugs didn’t work ;)

This is how you look if you try hard to keep a straight face, arriving at a hotel after traveling for 19 long hours, being awake 24 hours straight with only 4 hours of sleep before that:

Good night :)
